Discover 400 years of diamond history in Europe’s only Diamond Museum and find out why Amsterdam is called the “City of Diamonds”. The museum takes you on a journey that starts 3 billion years ago, 200 km below your feet and ends up in the ring on your finger. The hero of this journey is the diamond. The world’s hardest material, the gemstone with a never-ending sparkle. Be prepared to be amazed.

Located in the heart of Amsterdam, between the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, the Diamond Museum features a very extensive permanent collection. The exhibition travels back in time and explains how diamonds were geologically formed into their final shape. It gives you an idea of how human’s passion for diamonds developed and shows how diamonds have increasingly been associated with wealth and power.

The collection displays historical crowns and famous diamonds are replicated to show how those with power used diamonds to carry out their status. Explore the crowns of Royals around the world and when you are done, try one on yourself with the Crown Yourself app.

The Diamond Museum does not only present a historical view. It also has a stunning permanent collection with famous pieces, such as the glass-diamond Katana, the smallest diamond ever polished, and the diamond Ape Skull. This skull contains 17,000 brilliant diamonds.
