Il programma nel dettaglio

There she blows! Head out into the ice blue waters of the Salish Sea and see if you can spot a whale with us. These magnificent creatures are common in the waters around Vancouver, where they come to feed and socialise. Occupying a sacred position in First Nations beliefs, they were later hunted by whalers with harpoons, who risked life and limb for their costly meat and blubber. Luckily for us and the whales, the only shooting you’ll be doing nowadays is with your camera.

Keep your eyes peeled for the stars of the show, the distinctive black and white orca whales. The peoples of the northwest coast say that their song is so beautiful all of creation stops to listen to it. They hunt in pods, giving them their other name ‘killer whales’, and can often be seen cutting through the glassy waters of coastal inlets. There’s plenty of other species about, including huge grey whales, who you might see ‘spy hopping’ – poking their heads out of the water to get a good look about. Minke whales also come into the bay in groups, filtering for plankton, krill and small fish and blowing spumes of water into the air. Or you might spot a Humpback. These unusual whales are a favourite because they love slapping their tails into the water and ‘breaching’ – jumping out of the water to spectacular effect.

It’s not only whales that live in these waters – keep an eye out for sea birds and seals. You’ll travel in a comfortable high-speed boat with protection from the elements. All you need to do is bring your binoculars, and get ready for a whale of a time in beautiful British Columbia.
