Delve into the past of Russia’s glorious artistic heritage on a visit to the Tretyakov Gallery.
This unsurpassed art gallery, named after its founder, the famous merchant Pavel Tretyakov (1832-1898), houses one of the country’s biggest collections of Russian art. Tretyakov was a big sponsor of arts of the 19th century and his dream was to build a large museum open to everyone irrespective of class or fortune with a substantial collection of exhibits to help people understand and admire the history of Russian Art.
The project was realized in 1881 with an inauguration of the gallery. Tretyakov presented more than 2,000 exhibits to the gallery from his own collection in Moscow, beginning the history of what has become an impressive museum today. After his death in 1898 the collection grew quite rapidly taking on new dimensions following the October Revolution of 1917 when museum collections were privatised and art was transferred from other museums and religious buildings. Works were also bought and donated from private collectors.
Stroll around and explore more than 170,000 works of art created by Russian artists covering many centuries and styles. Besides its great collection of religious icons, we will admire the exclusive historical panorama of Russian painting from the 11th century up to the present day. Among some of the best most known pieces is the 12th century Byzantine ‘Virgin of Vladimir’, widely regarded to be the finest panel icon of its type and the medieval masterpiece of Andrei Rublev called the ‘Trinity’. Whatever your taste in art, be it modern, classic or ancient you will be sure to find something to tickle your fancy.
