Let your mind go back in time as you experience the solid grandeur of these ancient city walls, built to protect old Constantinople from the threat of invasion both from sea and from land. Enjoy great views of Istanbul and the sea beyond while getting a real sense of the strategic importance of this fortified city, located at the crossroads between Europe and Asia.

Our stroll through history begins at the Yedikule Fortress, an impressive seven-towered bastion that in its time functioned as a treasury, archive and state prison. See the dungeons where diplomats would frequently be held when the Ottoman Empire declared war on the foreign powers they represented and where even Ottoman sultans were jailed and put to death. Visit the old city gates, the cemetery of the Orthodox Patriarchs and the reputedly miraculous fountain of holy water located in the Church of St. Mary of the Spring.

One of the highlights however is the chance to walk on the walls themselves – we cover over a kilometre of wall from the Belgrate Gate to the Silivri Gate – and marvel at the impressive engineering of these sturdy structures that have withstood the test of so much time.

This tour of the ancient walls of Constantinople provides one of the most satisfying outings in this great city, especially if you are the type of person who likes to get off the beaten track and keep moderately fit in the process. Prepare for an exciting adventure!
